First Time in India? The Wellness Traveler's Honest Playbook

Where to land, how to pace week one, what to book ahead and what to leave open — hard-won advice for a first wellness journey.

First Time in India? The Wellness Traveler's Honest Playbook

Land soft

Choose a gentle entry point: Kochi, Goa or Rishikesh over a mega-city. Give yourself 48 hours with nothing scheduled beyond walks and good food. Jet lag plus sensory intensity is real — the travelers who struggle are the ones who book a 6am yoga intensive for day one.

Book ahead vs. leave open

Book ahead: Ayurveda programs (good doctors fill up), Mysore shalas (months ahead), and any stay in peak season (Nov–Feb). Leave open: cafés, day treks, and at least two completely unplanned days per week. India rewards the unplanned day more than any country we know.

The pacing rule

One anchor activity per day, maximum. A sunrise practice OR a long trek OR an estate tour — not all three. Recovery is a feature of the journey, not a failure of planning.
